National Day of Mourning: Honouring Workers and Renewing Our Commitment to Safety

On April 28, Milton Hydro joins our fellow local distribution companies and organizations across Canada in recognizing the National Day of Mourning - a day dedicated to remembering workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or experienced lasting impacts as a result of workplace tragedies. We also pause to acknowledge the families, friends, and colleagues whose lives are forever changed by these events.

First observed nationally in the 1980s and formally recognized by Parliament in 1991 through the Workers Mourning Day Act, April 28 serves as both a moment of reflection and a call to action. The reality remains sobering: in 2023, more than 1,000 workplace fatalities were recorded in Canada, alongside hundreds of thousands of reported work‑related injuries and illnesses. These figures represent real people - and impacts that extend far beyond the workplace.

Safety Above All Else is a core value that guides how we operate every day. Through our WSPS Excellence Program through which we developed our Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and the ongoing leadership of our Joint Health and Safety Committee, we work proactively to identify risks, strengthen safeguards, and foster a culture of care and accountability. Understanding that an empowered workforce is essential to maintaining a safety-first environment, we focus on strong training and continuous learning to identify risks, speak up, and look out for one another.

We are proud to stand Better Together with the Power Workers Union of Canada (PWUC) in our shared commitment to protecting all workers. This partnership reinforces our belief that safety is a collective responsibility - one built on trust, communication, and looking out for one another.

To mark the National Day of Mourning, Milton Hydro will fly its flags at half‑mast and observe a moment of silence, honouring those affected and reaffirming our responsibility to learn from the past and protect the living.
Today, and every day, we remain committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, supported, and empowered to return home healthy at the end of each day.
