New Electric Vehicle Charging Rate Now Enrolling for Milton Hydro Customers
Milton Hydro is now enrolling for a new Electric Vehicle Charging (EVC) Rate to help make public EV charging more affordable and widely available. This new rate, created by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), is designed specifically for public EV charging stations and reflects how they use the electricity grid.
What is the EVC Rate?
The EVC Rate significantly reduces the electricity delivery costs for eligible public EV charging stations — from the full standard rate down to just 17% of the usual Retail Transmission Service Rate. This reduction helps lower operating costs and supports the growth of EV charging in areas where demand is still developing.
Who can apply?
This new rate is designed for public EV charging stations, not residential home chargers. Examples include stations located:
- Along highways and major roads
- At retail centres, plazas, or shopping malls
- At municipal, university, school, or hospital sites
- At multi-unit residential buildings (e.g., condominiums)
- In employee parking areas
To qualify, a charging site must meet specific requirements, such as operating a Direct Current Fast Charger and having at least 90% of its demand dedicated to EV charging.
When and how to apply
Milton Hydro will begin accepting applications for the EVC Rate ahead of our 2026 distribution rates taking effect. Eligible customers can opt in by submitting a simple form, and the new rate will apply starting with the next billing period once approved.
Why this matters
The EVC Rate is designed to encourage more public EV charging stations in our community by lowering electricity costs. It’s an important step toward expanding Ontario’s charging network and supporting a cleaner transportation future.
