Changes coming to the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) and the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) on March 1, 2024
The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and the Ministry of Energy are expanding eligibility for the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) and the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) by increasing their income eligibility thresholds on March 1, 2024.
OESP Changes
The
OESP will reduce the cost of your household electricity by applying a monthly credit directly to your bill. The credit amount will depend on how many people live in your home, your combined household income, and energy use intensity.
The
Ontario Energy Board (OEB) administers the program while the Ministry of Energy provides financial and program oversight.
LEAP Changes
If you’re behind on your electricity bill and face having your service disconnected, you may qualify for emergency financial help through LEAP.
LEAP is meant to assist households in emergency situations only and is not meant to provide you with ongoing help to pay your bills. There are also special customer service rules available for low-income households. You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for these programs, and must go through one of the intake agencies in Ontario listed in the link below.
The OEB has also changed the LEAP grant amounts to reflect inflationary changes. It is recommended that customers already receiving LEAP financial assistance, to check in with their community agency to see if they need to reapply to receive the additional funding.
